The Candy Report

Thanksgiving Busy At Upper Canada Village
Candy Pollard

There will be fun for the whole family at Upper Canada Village on Thanksgiving Weekend with old-fashioned games of ring toss, tug-o-war contests, sack races, and more! Visitors will also be able to try their hand at some 19th century fall activities, such as stuffing mattresses with straw, building model rail fences, designing quilt blocks, or stringing apples and pumpkins.

The Village itself will be in full operation, with horse-drawn wagon and boat rides being offered as usual. Special activities depicting Fall on the Farm will also be taking place over the course of the weekend, where visitors will be able to see a range of 19th century harvest activities such as quilting, weaving, pickling, preserving, making cider and sauerkraut, smoking pork, wool dyeing, candlemaking, corn stooking and horse-powered threshing.

A family can make the most of their visit by planning to have a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner right on site. Willard’s Hotel is now taking reservations for dinner at (613) 543 0660. It will be open on Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as well as on Monday, October 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (dinners are $16.99 per adult / $10.99 for kids 12 and under). The Harvest Barn Restaurant will also be serving dinner on both Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

What nicer way to celebrate the autumn season than by a private horse-drawn carriage ride through a picturesque garden setting. The Village will be offering Pommier Carriage tours ($30 per couple / $45 for up to four individuals) through the Queen Elizabeth Gardens on Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. The rides will be offered first-come, first-served; reservations are now being accepted at (613) 543-4328.

The Village Store will be offering some great fall specials, including 40% off Maple Syrup, 30% off clothing, and up to 75% off other select merchandise. And for this weekend only, there will be other fall products, food sampling and more just outside the Village Store!
