The Candy Report

Hilarious Farce Up Next at Upper Canada Playhouse
Candy Pollard

This is the time of summer when things come a bit unhinged at Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg—almost like the circus coming to town. The time when audiences laugh their heads off at hilarious actors playing frazzled characters at the brink of disaster. It’s time for a little farce!

The next comedy in the popular theatre’s 2008 season, Out of Order, is set in a London hotel room during the Margaret Thatcher era. Richard Bauer plays Member of Parliament Richard Willey, whose plans to skip a sitting of the House of Commons to have a secret romantic encounter with the Leader of the Opposition’s secretary turn into a nightmare with the discovery of a dead body in their London hotel room. He browbeats his Private Secretary, George Pigden, played by Jamie Williams, into helping him get rid of the body and avert the attention of the Police, his wife and the Prime Minister. The pressure gets turned up as they attempt to execute this massive cover-up by stick-handling around a conniving waiter and a suspicious hotel manager. The cover-up soon escalates into a frenzy of hilarious activity with the arrival of an overzealous detective, the MP’s angry wife, the secretary’s furious husband, a headstrong nurse and an Italian maid! All in one evening! Joining this pair of funny men is John Weir, who also directs. Also featured is Walter Learning, Victor Cornfoot, AnnaMarie Lea, Debra Hale, Katie Lawson, Parris Greaves and Brenda Quesnel.

Out of Order runs August 7-31 with evening shows Tuesday through Saturday at 8PM and matinees Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2PM. Call: 613-543-3713
