Hands On Hotbed Building Workshop At the Village
Candy Pollard
The Hands-on Hotbed Building Workshop will take place at the Pastor’s Home at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. In this workshop, visitors will be able to roll up their sleeves and participate in building a traditional wooden-frame hotbed using straw, manure, topsoil and glass window panes (bring your garden gloves!). Discussion during the workshop will also cover modern alternatives in hotbed construction. This is an ideal opportunity to get a head start on preparations for next year’s gardening season!
In the afternoon, visitors will be invited to join Garden Tours led by a Village horticultural interpreter through a selection of the gardens on site (tours commence at the front entrance at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.). Each afternoon tour will focus on late-blooming annuals and perennials, as well as on heirloom vegetables.
The workshops and guided tours offered during the Fall Gardens event are included in the regular admission to Upper Canada Village for the day, which also includes free horse-drawn boat and wagon rides around the historic site. Upper Canada Village is one of Canada’s foremost award-winning living history attractions, featuring over 100 costumed interpreters and more than 40 heritage buildings on 100 acres along the St. Lawrence River. Considered a “gem” by AAA/CAA and the recipient of the “highest distinction” 3-star rating by the Michelin Travel Guide, Upper Canada Village immerses guests daily in 19th century life, with more than a dozen demonstrated trades, a working 1860s flour mill and bakery, cheese-making, and heritage farming, including 19th century plant varieties, as well as Canadian horses and Berkshire pigs, both rare breeds.
More fall festivities are in store at Upper Canada Village: the “Fall Fair” on September 20 and 21, the “Quilt Show” on September 27 and 28, and “Fall at the Farm”, taking place from September 29 to October 5, when the Village’s daily operations close for the season. Special programming will be offered at the Village on Thanksgiving Weekend from October 10 to October 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and during its Flavours of Autumn Weekends on October 17 and 18 and 24 and 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
