The Candy Report
Dramatic Reading of A Christmas Carol
Candy Pollard
Come and celebrate the true spirit of the season as CBC Radio and St. John’s Presbyterian Church proudly present a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
This year’s presentation of the timeless classic will be held Sunday, Nov. 30th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the church, located at 28 Second St. East. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Since its inception in Cornwall six years ago, the CBC reading has become the anticipated launch of the holiday season for many folks, one which truly showcases the real meaning of Christmas. Engaging and entertaining local guest readers, complimented by an inspiring Celebrity CBC reader and festive music, set the stage for this beloved tale of its once miserly, but remorseful curmudgeon, Scrooge.
There is particular special delight to announce this year’s CBC Celebrity Reader will be Martina Fitzgerald, currently with World Report/The World at Six and formerly of Ontario Morning. She will be joined by the narrative talents of Coun. Bernadette Clement, Fr. Matthew Brunet, renowned playwright/director Janet Irwin and former Grand Chief Mike Kanentakernon Mitchell. Sublime vocal interpretations of the season by Chorus Novus, under the direction of Brian Hubelit, lend the perfect touch to this holiday favourite. A highlight of this year’s production will feature violist Nancy Eadie as guest soloist who will perform Celtic stylings, accompanied by Ruthanna MacPherson. Classical guitarist David Smith will be treating the audience to seasonal selections during the prelude.
Proceeds from this year’s performance will support Hospice Cornwall, noted Kathleen Hay, producer. More than $30,000 has been raised for non-profit community organizations since its inception in Cornwall, and organizers are proud to boast the local production ranks among the top fundraising CBC Radio readings Canada-wide, even surpassing much larger sites such as Victoria, B.C.
“We are delighted to be able to help out Hospice Cornwall this year in their important initiative,” she says. “When Dickens’ wrote this work, he penned it with an air towards bettering the causes of education, literacy and health care. “We can think of no more worthy a cause so needed for our community than providing quality end of life care for all our residents.”
Hay also gave special thanks to Scotiabank’s Team Scotia for lending its support to the festive fundraiser. All tickets purchased at the Brookdale Centre branch will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a maximum of $5,000.
Tickets are $15 per person and tax receipts are available.
“The generosity of their branch manager, Earl McBean, and the assistance of his staff, is greatly appreciated,” she said. “Not only is their financial support of significance, but their willingness to support our cause through time and effort, is priceless to the success of it.”
Come and join them for this classic – and don’t forget to stay for hot cider and a slice of Christmas cake, too!
