Another Norm Foster Comedy at the Playhouse
Candy Pollard

Morrisburg’s Upper Canada Playhouse, hot on the heels of one of its busiest Season starts ever, is bracing for an even larger assault on its Box Office with its second smash hit comedy, Wrong For Each Other. It’s one of popular comic playwright Norm Foster’s most produced shows. The play also features two of The Playhouse’s most popular actors-Kathleen Egan Veinotte and Jamie Williams, co-stars of last Season’s crowd pleaser, The Affections of May.

When Artistic Director Donnie Bowes watched the audience response to the appeal and comic timing of this dynamic duo last Season, he knew what he had to do. ‘I knew that Wrong For Each Other had to be in the Season. I also knew that it had to star Kate and Jamie.’ Wrong For Each Other is one of Foster’s finest, funniest and earliest works and it has had countless productions all over the world. Toronto’s Globe & Mail called it ‘very funny and perfect theatrical summer fare’, Australia’s North Shore Times declared ‘it entertains from start to finish’ and Thunder Bay’s Chronicle Journal said ‘it kept the audience laughing and clapping throughout.’ In short, the Playhouse audience is in for a treat! ‘Norm is at his funniest when he creates characters who are in the throws of a fiery relationship and when he pits them against each other in an hilarious battle of the sexes. Audiences love the one-liners and hilarious observations that result from these kind of relationships and they can often see themselves in the characters onstage.’ This show takes the audience on a roller-coaster ride with two such characters, Norah and Rudy. They have a chance meeting in a restaurant several years after their marriage break-up and take a trip down Memory Lane remembering the ups and downs of their past. One of the most entertaining aspects of the play is the fact that the audience is transported to so many places and get introduced to so many situations in these characters’ lives by a cast of just two actors. It’s one of the winning aspects of this show. By the time the show ends the audience feels like they’re old friends. They’re cheering for them to get back together. But whether or not that happens is something The Playhouse is keeping under wraps.

The trip into the past that the actors and audience will embark on will be facilitated by a clever and moveable set designed by John Thompson, who designed last Season’s great set for Having Hope at Home. Jamie Williams is known to Playhouse audiences for his hilarious performances in popular Playhouse farces like Run For Your Wife and It Runs in the Family. Most recently he was also seen in Norm Foster’ Bedtime Stories and The Affections of May. He has just appeared in the premiere of Foster’s new play, Skinflick, at Neptune Theatre in Halifax. Kathleen Egan Veinotte is also no stranger to Playhouse audiences. She has starred in such recent popular shows as The Affections of May, Bedtime Stories, Looking and Anne to name a few. Williams and Egan Veinotte are looking forward to teaming up again for this much anticipated show. Right from the start tickets have been brisk for this show. Audiences have caught on to the fact that it’s a show that has everything-from hilarious comedy and heartfelt, poignant moments to all the qualities that make a great story.
