Dive into Cornwall Waterfest this Weekend

Cornwall Waterfest has become a staple in the city since its origin in 2011. Cornwall, a city built along the St. Lawrence, celebrates the beauty and euphoria that is felt being along the water. The season of summer is either spent along the water or wishing that you were. The summer heat can be cruel and to spend a day along the water can be an ample solution to enjoying summer without melting on those humid days. Come out enjoy Cornwall Waterfest this Saturday, August 13th.

Waterfest takes place at Lock 19 of the historic Cornwall Canal. This Canal was originally built to bypass the Long Sault Rapids and fOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAor many years it played a crucial role in transporting goods to and from Quebec and Eastern Ontario.

The main event of the weekend will be the competitive dragon boat races. The event itself incorporates speed and agility and builds unity as teams row as quickly as possible while building off different members strengths and weaknesses. Although Dragon Boat racing is becoming a popular sport in modern society, the sport itself has a lengthy history in China. Dragon boat racing began in China more than 2000 years ago, originating from superstitious beliefs that the boat racing would ensure prosperous and bountiful crops. The sport symbolizes unity and group integrity.

A little information on the rules of dragon boat racing:

  • a team generally consists of 20 paddlers, a drummer at the bow, and is guided by a steers person at the stern
  • 6 women must be in the boat at all times, a balance between men and women is crucial for synchronization
  • teams combine rhythm and power to achieve maximum acceleration and speed over a specified distance, a perfectly synchronized team is visually appealing and will come out stronger and better than a team that is not synchronized

Aside from the dragon boat races there will also be a Waterfest market that will feature some of the greatest and most unique vendors in Cornwall and surrounding areas. These Vendors include:
