A group of Chinese scholars have taken up residence in Cornwall for a unique educational experience – and they’re getting a taste of Canadian life at the same time.

The six scholars are visiting from Qingdao Port Vocational and Technical College and are observing classes in the Supply Chain Management Program at the St. Lawrence College Cornwall Campus.

The group arrived on September 19th and will remain in Cornwall until November 23rd.

“During their stay, we are taking the opportunity to showcase Cornwall and the surrounding communities by bringing them to various events and attractions,” said Jennifer Haley, Associate Dean of the Cornwall Campus.

So far, the group has had a chance to visit Pumpkinferno and other events in the area along with visits to Montreal and the nation’s capital. Last week, the group got their first taste of a true Canadian tradition in the form of a Cornwall Colts hockey game at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

The Chinese delegation are among a growing group of international students who have come to St. Lawrence College in Cornwall to learn and, by extension, experience Canadian culture.

The Cornwall campus has experienced a healthy increase this academic year, and a big factor in that growth can be directly attributed to an increase in international students. This segment of the student population has risen from 60 to 300 students and is a result of dedicated outreach efforts by College staff.

“We have students from well over 10 countries in Cornwall, and more than 40 countries College wide,” said Cornwall Campus Dean Deb Stava. “This international flavour creates an opportunity for cultural exchanges and makes the campus a very interesting place to be.”
