Cornwall hosting OFSAA high school basketball championship
Cornwall will have its own March Madness this year with the arrival of the OFSAA Boys A Basketball provincial championship.
Running from March 4th to 7th and hosted by St. Lawrence Secondary School, the tournament will feature 20 of the top A-level high school boys basketball teams from across Ontario. Over 300 players, coaches and supporters will be in the City for four days, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
It will also provide some great action for local basketball fans.
“They’ll get to see some of the best (young) basketball players in Ontario,” said Josh Greenley, one of the tournament convenors and head coach of the St. Lawrence junior boys basketball team.
The tournament will feature the top teams from 18 regions across Ontario including the St. Lawrence Saints – the tournament host – and another eastern Ontario entry. For the Saints, it will be familiar territory. The team will be competing in its fourth straight OFSAA A championship, winning the consolation championship in the first year and making it to the quarterfinals in the last two straight outings.
“To make it here and have it here, with some of our guys playing their last game on our home court, is a nice feeling,” said Mr. Greenley. “It’s really exciting to be playing for a provincial title at home.”
Take in the action!
Tournament games will be played at St. Lawrence Secondary School and the former General Vanier Secondary School. Championship passes will be available for $10 (including a program) for admission to all games and there will also be day passes on sale for $5. Tickets can be purchased at the venues prior to games.
The tournament schedule, and additional details, will be posted on the OFSAA website.
“We want to create a memorable experience for the players and the spectators,” said Mr. Greenley.
