Over 400 residents from across eastern Ontario will be visiting Cornwall for three days in April for the Royal Canadian Legion District Convention.

Hosted by Cornwall’s John McMartin Memorial Branch 297, the three-day district convention will host attendees from 63 different Legion branches in eastern Ontario – from as far west as Napanee, north to Petawawa and east to the Quebec border. The event runs from Friday, April 20th to Sunday, April 22nd.

“We are quite proud to be hosting the district convention,” said Legion Branch 297 President Linda Fisher. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase our Branch and our great City and to encourage them to visit again.”

It’s expected that 170 delegates will be in attendance along with spouses and other attendees, generating significant economic spin-offs in the form of hotel room stays and restaurant and store visits.

The convention will include social and business gatherings along with opportunities for attendees to sight-see and explore the City. There will also be a ceremonial parade (weather permitting) to the Cenotaph on Second Street West on Saturday, April 21st.

“We’ve hosted the district convention before and we are expecting another great turnout this time around,” said Deputy District Commander Ken Heagle.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 is one of the largest branches in the district and over the years it has had a strong presence within the Legion. Former Branch Presidents Larry Keen served as President of the Ontario Provincial Command while fellow former President George O’Dair served as Vice-President of the Dominion executive of the Royal Canadian Legion.
