Canadian Broomball Championships

Some of Canada’s best broomball teams will be descending on Cornwall this April for the 2019 Canadian Senior Broomball Championships.

Excitement is starting to build for the event, which will run from April 10-14 at the Benson Centre with 20 teams and 500-plus players, coaches and team officials expected to attend.

Senior competition refers to players ages 21 and up and the tournament will feature teams in three divisions – 6 elite women’s teams, 8 elite men’s teams and 6 mixed teams.

“The competition at this championship will be world-class,” said Sara-Lee Pynenburg, a member of the Eastern Ontario Vipers and of one the tournament organizers. “The winners will move on to represent Canada at the world broomball championships so there will be a lot on the line.”

It’s been nearly 40 years since Cornwall has hosted the national broomball championship. The event was last held in Cornwall in 1982.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming all of the teams and athletes for this event,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase our community and all of the great things we have to offer.”

Organizers are now busy with planning the logistics of the event. They have created a dedicated website for the event as well as a Facebook event page, Twitter account and Instagram account.

“We want to make it easy for fans and interested residents to follow us and keep up to speed on the tournament,” said Mrs. Pynenburg.
