It’s hockey season at the Benson Centre, which means you’ll find a steady stream of jersey-clad players coming and going from the facility on weekends.

This past weekend, the players were coming from far and wide for the 36th annual Cornwall Girls Hockey Association’s Competitive Tournament.

The three-day tournament kicked off Friday and featured a full field of 60 teams from Novice to Midget. The teams came from across Ontario, Quebec and the United States, with some from as far as Springfield and Buffalo.

“We had the ice booked on all three pads (at the Benson Centre) as well as the Civic Complex, Long Sault, Maxville, pretty much every arena around,” said Cornwall Girls Hockey Association President Mike Turcotte. “It was a really busy weekend.”

And it wasn’t just the rinks that were busy. With roughly 1,000 players participating and hundreds of family members watching on, the Competitive Tournament had a significant economic impact on the community in the form of hotel room stays, restaurant visits, shopping excursions and the like.

Mr. Turcotte said many teams took advantage of the downtime between games to enjoy team meals at local restaurants or taking in local events and activities such as Pumpkinferno, Ghost Walk for Charity or Rush Hour Escapes.

“It’s just such a busy weekend. (Pretty much) every hotel room (in the City) was booked,” he added.

The fun will repeat itself in a few weeks time when the Cornwall Girls Hockey Association hosts its annual House League Tournament. Like the Competitive Tournament, the house league event will run over three days and a similar number of teams are expected to participate.

“It’s just about sold out,” Mr. Turcotte said.

The House League Tournament will take place from November 8th to 10th.
