The Cornwall BMX Track has only been open a short time, but it’s already drawing visitors to the City.

“We’ve had some people from Kingston, Ottawa and Almonte come and try out the track during opening week,” said Dan Drouin, Cornwall BMX Club President. “We also had some riders from Chatham drop by to test it out before heading on to the Canadian championship in Drummondville.”

The visitors will be coming in even larger numbers in August when the track hosts its first-ever provincial qualifier.

“We’re expecting upwards of 125 competitors and about 200 spectators to attend that event,” said Mr. Drouin. “They’ll be arriving from other parts of Ontario, Quebec and maybe the United States.”

The event will kick off on Friday, August 10th with a charity race for BMX Canada’s scholarship fund, followed by the provincial qualifier on Saturday, August 11th. Things wrap up on Sunday, August 12th with the Race for Life, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

There will be racing for every age group and class – novice, intermediate and expert – and the qualifier is open to any rider who has a valid BMX Canada or USA BMX licence.

While it may be Ontario’s newest BMX track, the Cornwall facility in Guindon Park holds the distinction of being the longest BMX Canada sanctioned track in Ontario. It’s already generating plenty of positive reviews and that is sure to continue when the provincial qualifier arrives.

“With all the compliments and support we’ve been getting, it really makes us feel like all the hard work our volunteers and executives have put in has all been worth it,” Mr. Drouin added. “Hopefully our community and our visitors will be able to enjoy the facility for years to come as we try to continuously improve the track and highlight its unique features.”
