Optimist District Annual Convention

Optimist District Annual Convention

Optimist Club members from across eastern and central Ontario will gather in Cornwall in August for the Central Ontario Optimist District Annual Convention.

An estimated 125 club members and an additional 25 spouses will be in the City over a three-day period to complete some business for the organization, take part in training and networking events and enjoy a little sightseeing at the same time.

The delegates will begin arriving on August 17th and the convention wrap up on August 19th.

In tribute to the Cornwall area’s heritage, organizers are putting a Scottish twist on the convention, with a fun Highland Games competition planned with events like the stuffed sheep toss.

“We’re trying to make it fun and memorable for the delegates in addition to the business they will be carrying out,” said John Gilmour who, along with wife Chantal, are among the Optimist Club of Cornwall members helping to organize the convention.

The convention will consist of the organization’s annual general meeting, a Governor’s Ball and numerous training sessions. There will also be a chance for the visitors to explore the Cornwall area and discover some of the things that make it a great place to visit and unwind.

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase Cornwall to visitors from other areas of the province,” added Chantal.

Cornwall last hosted the Optimist District Annual Convention 18 years ago.

With a membership of 55, the Optimist Club of Cornwall is the biggest one within its district.
