Cornwall looking to attract more sporting events
March 18, 2019Cornwall’s great location, amazing accommodations, modern sports facilities and active volunteer base make it an ideal place to host major sporting events.
That’s the message city officials will be spreading this week at the Sport Events Congress in the nation’s capital. Organized by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance, the Sport Events Congress gives municipal representatives a chance to speak directly with events rights holders about hosting future events in their communities. This year’s event runs from March 19-21.
“Cornwall has a strong track record of successfully hosting major sporting events,” said Lorne Taillon, Leisure Arts Coordinator with the City of Cornwall. “These events can bring in hundreds of athletes, coaches and officials, and attract thousands of spectators. The economic impact is significant.”
In addition to meeting with officials of various sports bodies, Cornwall Tourism will also have an exhibit at the conference to showcase Cornwall’s potential in the sport tourism market.
“We have all of the ingredients to be a choice site for major sporting events and we are already seeing some rewards from these efforts,” said Kevin Lajoie, Tourism Coordinator.
According to Statistics Canada, the sport tourism industry generates $6.8 billion in economic activity in Canada annually. Cornwall already hosts a number of major sporting events each year, including the Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic, St. Lawrence Marathon, Cornwall Triathlon and the Ontario Cheerleading Federation’s Winter Blast competition. Combined, these events attract thousands of athletes and supporters to Cornwall each year.
Looking ahead, Cornwall will be hosting the 2019 Canadian Senior Broomball Championships at the Benson Centre in April as well as the 2020 Ontario Men’s and Women’s Curling Championship at the Cornwall Civic Complex early next year.
