SD&G Dog Show

Eastern Canada’s largest dog show returns to the Long Sault Parkway the weekend of Saturday, August 25th.

The SD&G Dog Show will see upwards of 1,000 visitors – and some 4,000 four-legged visitors – from across Canada and the U.S. arrive at Woodlands Campround on the Parkway for four days of competition in the Canadian Kennel Club sanctioned event.

The event features 20 specialties and a number of national classes, something which draws exhibitors from far and wide who either camp or stay in local hotels during the event. The judges also come from as far away as Australia and Portugal.

Show superintendent Jodie O’Meara said a majority of the exhibitors return annually to the show, which is now in its 17th year.

“They love the location. Many arrive early or stay later (after the show) and make a vacation out of it, enjoying the park and the area,” she said. “Many off them tell us it’s their favourite show of the year.

Outside of another show in Alberta, the SD&G Dog Show can lay claim to being Canada’s largest dog show. And while it’s fun for the exhibitors, it’s also plenty of fun to watch. Spectators can expect to see all types of purebred breeds competing in a variety of divisions including obedience and agility.

“People are welcome to come and watch and learn about the different dog breeds that exist,” added O’Meara.

Spectators are welcome but must purchase a day-pass to the Long Sault Parkway.

It’s not the only dog competition on the calendar. The following weekend, Farran Park in Ingleside will be the site of the Cornwall Dog Show, hosted by the Cornwall District Kennel Club. That event also draws hundreds of visitors to the region.

About the Long Sault Parkway

The Long Sault Parkway is home to three unique Campgrounds with over 600 campsites (Mille Roches, Woodlands and McLaren), where you can get away from it all in the heart of the river. It also boasts the largest public beach on the St. Lawrence River corridor (Mille Roches), winding bike paths, pristine nature trails, boat launches, picnic areas, scuba diving and remarkable fishing. In fact, Hoople Creek Basin is one of the largest natural Pickerel fish hatcheries and fishing areas in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. This is a natural paradise, second to none, and it runs through a river only minutes away from Canada’s major commercial artery, Highway 401.
