Focus Art Exhibition

Cornwall’s rich arts scene will be on full display during the 2018 Juried Art Exhibition at Cornwall Square.

Presented by Focus Art, the exhibition is a pop-up art gallery of sorts, showcasing the work of more than 50 established and emerging artists working in oils, acrylics, watercolour, sculpture, mixed media and photography.

A total of 131 pieces – all created by Cornwall and area artists – have been chosen for the exhibition, which will be open to the public for eight days beginning on Thursday, May 17th. Scotiabank has sponsored the event, with prizes awarded for each category along with a private reception. There’s also a People’s Choice Award for the favourite art piece as selected by the public.

Focus Art President Linda Geisel has been involved in staging the exhibition for the past three years and during that time, she has witnessed an increase in the number of artists who are willing to submit their work for judging.

“This tells me that art is more than a pastime for hobbyists or an outlet for self-expression,” she said. “It’s telling me that art has become a serious business. How exciting is that?”

Many of the art pieces in the exhibition are for sale but will not be sold on site. Information about each artist is available for patrons to enquire about purchasing a piece directly.

Now in its 13th year, the Focus Art exhibition has served as an ideal platform to showcase great artists and encourage newcomers on the arts scene. It’s also a great reminder of the vibrant arts scene that exists in Cornwall and the surrounding area. Together with the efforts of Focus Art, Cornwall now boasts two art galleries – Cailuan and Cline House – which provide workshops and spaces for artists to show their work. Your Arts Council is in place to support all disciplines of art while the Arts Collective continues to work towards the realization of an arts centre.

“The visual arts scene is steadily expanding,” Mrs. Geisel said. “All of this demonstrates the art community’s desire to grow.”

The exhibition will be open to the public in the Cornwall Square (a first-floor unit near the old Sears location) on the following days and times:

  • Thursday, May 17 – 11am to 7pm
  • Friday, May 18 – 11am to 5pm
