Ontario Cheerleading Federation competition exceeds expectations
The Cornwall Civic Complex has played host to countless events over the years, everything from big-name hockey games, concerts and festivals to more personal functions like weddings and baby showers.
Now she can add another event to the resume – a cheerleading competition.
The parking lot at the Civic Complex and Aquatic Centre was at capacity all day on Satuday, February 10th as groups from all over Ontario and Quebec headed indoors for the first-ever Ontario Cheerleading Federation event held at the venue.
Despite the latest blast of winter outdoors, the Winter Blast competition indoors attracted over 1,700 participants and spectators, far exceeding expectations.
“The response was amazing and we received a lot of positive comments from participants and visitors,” said Janice Robinson, Facility Rental Coordinator at the Civic Complex. “They were really impressed with the complex and how everything was run.”
The competition drew over 40 teams from across southern and eastern Ontario and western Quebec, generating significant economic spin-offs in the form of hotel stays and restaurant visits.
“Our box office saw a steady stream of spectators throughout the day,” said Ms. Robinson. “We also saw a lot of local residents at the event. We’re thankful that the community stepped up and supported the event.”
Spectators were treated to some excellent competition, with the teams showcasing their best flips and combination moves on the competition floor before a panel of judges. The higher-level teams (Levels 5 and 6) were vying for a bid to attend the world championships in Orlando later this year.
“It was a memorable day and we hope it’s the first (cheerleading competition) of many to come,” added Ms. Robinson.
