Renegade Bass Tour

The mighty St. Lawrence River will be in the spotlight this weekend as the Renegade Bass Tour Canadian Championship Classic arrives in Morrisburg.

The two-day event serves as the final championship event for the 2018 Renegade Bass Tour, with teams of anglers competing in four previous tour stops – including one in Cornwall – in hopes of qualifying for the final.

“Initially, we had 76 teams on the tour and that has been whittled down to the top 40 teams (for the Classic),” said volunteer organizer Matt Massey, who competes on the tour himself. “To compete at our level, it doesn’t get much higher than what we do.”

The teams will be competing for a top prize of a new Bass Cat fishing boat (valued at over $85,000) along with other cash prizes for the top 10 finishers.

The quality of the fishing and the talent of those on board means pretty much anything can happen.

“Anyone in the top 15 (after day one) really could go out and win this. And a team in 40th place can win it as well,” said Mr. Massey. “That’s the beauty of fishing on the St. Lawrence and St. Francis. The fish are so big.”

Just how great is the fishing in the area? To answer that, Mr. Massey pointed to a recent Bassmaster Elite Series event in nearby Waddington, New York – an event featuring some of the biggest fishing names in the U.S.

“When they got on the stage, there were talking about how it’s such a great place to fish,” he said. “When they make those kinds of statements, that’s saying something.”

The Renegade Bass Tour stops in Cornwall (St. Francis) and Morrisburg (St. Lawrence) generate numerous economic spin-offs in the form of accommodations, meals, shopping and the like. The tour stops are also well-received by the participants.

“Those are the two pre-eminent destinations for Renegade Bass. Everyone wants to fish them,” Mr. Massey added.

This will be the 18th time that Renegade Bass Tour has held an event on the St. Lawrence River, making it one of the most popular event locations in the Tour’s history. Morrisburg has always been one of the best stops on the tour as well, with big crowds attending and great hospitality at each event.

Take in the action!

This year promises to be the biggest yet and spectators can enjoy the live weigh-ins that will be taking place at the Morrisburg Town Launch on Saturday, September 8th at 4pm and Sunday, September 9th at 3pm. There will be free fishing gear and prizes for children and lots of big fish action to take in on the stage.
